Cambodia, ROK to Elevate Relations to Strategic Partnership

PHNOM PENH, May 17, 2024 — Cambodia and the Republic of Korea (ROK) have agreed to upgrade their bilateral relationship to a "Strategic Partnership" to promote closer and more prosperous cooperation.

The agreement was made during a summit meeting between Prime Minister Hun Manet of Cambodia and President Yoon Suk Yeol of the ROK in Seoul this morning, during the Prime Minister's official visit to the ROK from May 15 to 18.

President Yoon extended a warm welcome to Prime Minister Hun Manet on his first official visit to Korea as Prime Minister, emphasizing that it will further strengthen the relations and cooperation between both nations.

In response, Prime Minister Hun Manet thanked the President, the government, and the people of Korea for their warm hospitality and praised the good and long-lasting relationship between the two countries.

The two leaders discussed bilateral cooperation in key areas, including politics, economy, trade, infrastructure development, national defense and security, among others.

As a result, they agreed to strengthen and expand the existing cooperation and upgrade the relationship to a "Strategic Partnership" to promote closer and more prosperous collaboration.

In the areas of economy and trade, the two leaders agreed on efforts to promote better trade and investment through free trade agreements such as the Cambodia-Korea Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

Additionally, they agreed to promote better relations between the people of the two countries.

In the field of defense and security, the two leaders expressed satisfaction with the close joint efforts between Cambodia and Korea, including joint military training on peacekeeping cooperation through a trilateral partnership between the two countries and the UN (UN-ROK-Cambodia), as well as cooperation in the fight against terrorism and transnational crimes.

The two leaders also exchanged views on cooperation in the agriculture, labor, infrastructure, digital transformation, culture, and arts sectors.
